• Under the general supervision of the Shift Lieutenant, supervise subordinate security assigned to the housing units, and maintain custody and control of all inmates assigned to the units.
• Conduct routine inspections of the living areas to ensure compliance with security, safety, and sanitation standards.
• Investigate alleged misconduct by inmates and security personnel within the area of responsibility.
• Assist with formal and informal counts.
• Supervise the job performance, conduct, and appearance of assigned security personnel and prepare employee evaluations.
• Counsel, recommend disciplinary action and train subordinate staff to required performance standards.
• Prepare reports as needed or required.
• Perform duties of Shift Lieutenant when necessary.

• Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
• A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related field may substitute for half of the required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
