Role Overview

Prison officers protect the public and impact prisoners’ lives. This fast‑paced role offers opportunities to act as a peacekeeper, counsellor, or teacher and work directly with prisoners in a unique environment.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain safety and security of the prison environment.
  • Build constructive, positive, and professional relationships with prisoners.
  • Support colleagues and operate as a single team to keep the prison and staff safe.
  • Work various shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays.
Qualifications
  • At least 18 years old at commencement.
  • Meet the Civil Service nationality requirements.
  • Pass a medical and fitness assessment, including eyesight and hearing standards.
  • Have suitable hearing without hearing aids.
  • Show good communication and influencing skills, commitment to quality, and care and understanding.
Benefits and Working Hours
  • Initial training 37 hours a week; choose 37, 39, or 41 hours a week after training.
  • Annual salary: £33,746 (37 hrs), £35,875 (39 hrs), £38,003 (41 hrs). Figures include all allowances.
  • Pay for shift patterns covering evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays. Public holidays and one extra privilege day added to holiday allowance.
  • Annual holiday: 25 days (increases to 30 days after 10 years).
  • Cycle to work scheme, travel loans, and other benefits.
Assessment Process
  • Stage 1:
    Online test (judgement and numerical skills).
  • Stage 2:
    Values‑based online test.
  • Online Assessment Centre (OAC) to assess behaviours and strengths.
  • Merit list kept for 12 months; highest scorers offered positions.
Relevant Policies
  • Applicants must provide correct and up‑to‑date documentation for pre‑employment checks.
  • Applicants who fail at the sift/interview stage must wait six months before re‑applying.
  • Suitable roles as Operational Support Grade (OSG) may be offered if unable to become a prison officer.
