Job Responsibilities
- Engage with youth throughout the day to ensure their safety, security, rehabilitation, and well‑being.
- Maintain frequent and supportive communication with youth.
- Serve as a mentor for new security staff, providing guidance and support in youth headcount management and daily reporting.
- Respond appropriately to emergency situations and conduct routine and unannounced security inspections.
- Perform routine and unannounced frisk searches and ensure each youth’s basic needs are met.
- Maintain knowledge of the security status of all assigned youth.
- Serve on all facility posts, including specialized units and various locations.
- Provide training, direction, and guidance to staff in carrying out their responsibilities.
- Supervise and lead youth and staff in specialized programs, services, and activities.
- Assist with shift operation supervision, maintaining shift schedules and coordinating staff coverage.
- Inspect all units to ensure compliance with agency policies and procedures.
- Ensure adequate supplies, proper grooming of youth, and address crisis interventions and behavioral disputes.
- Mediates disputes between youth and Juvenile Correctional Officers.
- Assist in performance evaluations of officers and ensure subordinate staff complies with agency policy and law.
- Complete required reports regarding incidents and matters affecting facility safety and security.
- Act as a member of the on‑call management team and respond to facility needs.
- Perform other security‑related duties as assigned by a supervisor.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be an officer in compliance with CLEE (Continuing Law Enforcement Education) and complete certification within six (6) months of employment.
- Must hold an 80% competency/proficiency exam score and possess supervisor and teaching skills.
- Valid state driver’s license and the ability to operate a state vehicle.
- Knowledge of state laws, institutional rules, and Child Abuse Statutes.
- Familiarity with secure facility operations and youth instruction methods.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and non‑verbal communication skills.
- Good judgment and initiative in varied situations.
- Ability to build healthy relationships with youth, promote respect and trust, and manage challenging behaviors.
- Maintain satisfactory working relationships with employees, families, and the general public.
- Adhere to a daily schedule, document activities, and supervise multiple youths effectively.
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field.
- Minimum of 18 months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
- Age 21 or older with a valid driver’s license and high school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of all required DJJ training courses and continued CLEE participation.
