Electrical Maintenance Supervisor

Job Summary

Directly supervise the high voltage electrical crew in the construction, operation and maintenance of the USC campus primary high voltage electrical distribution system including substations and the electrical distribution and control system of four energy facilities. This is a working supervisory position which participates in accomplishing work assignments as a skilled master trades craftsman in the areas of electrical distribution from the power company through building switch gear to include design coordination, project management, technical and safety oversight.

Performs highly‑skilled work in the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, equipment and fixtures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Respond to emergency maintenance situations after hours by communicating with night maintenance staff, facility services personnel, or USC police department dispatch, determining plan of action, and physically arriving at the area of distress to resolve the situation. (15%)
  • Work with power company, electrical engineers, and contractors to provide an integrated response during power outages. (15%)
  • Coordinate the installation of new and modified electrical systems including reading blueprints, schematics, or drawings; consulting with University Project Managers, contractors, and subcontractors to approve new construction plans based on USC electrical standards; review construction areas for electrical requirements; estimate costs for project work based on length, scope, manpower, and equipment requirements; actual installation or modification of electrical systems or supervision thereof;

    communicate expected installation or modification work with electrical supervisory personnel; troubleshoot newly modified systems to assure proper functioning. (20%)
  • Supervise high voltage electrical crew responsible for maintaining, installing and renovating the high voltage electrical system and performing mechanical repairs for substations, energy plants, and electrical distribution systems. Perform administrative oversight in terms of schedules, time and attendance, professional development, employee evaluations, training, and safety. Manage assigned resources and equipment. (25%)
  • Establish, maintain and monitor a comprehensive planned and corrective maintenance program for safe, reliable operation of the University‑wide high voltage electrical system and the electrical mechanical systems in all four energy plants and the electrical high voltage distribution system. Inspect, verify, communicate, and troubleshoot facility electrical issues, heavy duty motors and equipment; establish time associated cost of service work; assign work orders;

    communicate with Project Managers, the power company, Energy Services and plant personnel, and clients. (10%)
  • Communicate with project managers, billing liaisons, deans, department chairs, professors, and other department staff on a regular basis, bringing in upper management when necessary, to provide support, research issues, and enhance the image of facility services with University personnel by providing a sense of immediate customer service, solving problems, building rapport, gathering necessary information, and giving maintenance guidance and advice. (5%)
  • Perform administrative tasks including assisting and handling purchase requests, credit card purchases, inventory control, maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment, training and safety programs, accounting, and required personnel activities.
  • Estimate time, material or labor costs for use in project plans.
  • Manage resources and inventories.
  • Lead by example, solve problems, take initiative to provide services, develop strong customer relationships, measure cost and performance, keep accurate records, communicate effectively, develop proper procedures, define actions to resolve specific problem situations, communicate to management, and prepare reports.
