Position SummaryThe HVAC Technician is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing large‑scale commercial HVAC and domestic hot water systems that serve a diverse university campus. This role performs preventive and predictive maintenance, conducts advanced troubleshooting, and completes complex repairs to ensure reliable, year‑round operation of critical building systems. The HVAC Technician will also perform minor equipment installations and support system upgrades as needed.
A strong working knowledge of federal, state and local mechanical and electrical codes is essential to ensure all work is performed safely, efficiently and in compliance.
- Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on complex commercial HVAC systems, domestic hot water generated systems and system controls.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment and system problems and make repairs to restore systems to proper operating order.
- Supervise temporary and seasonal employees who assist with performing minor maintenance on equipment.
- Serve in an after‑hours on‑call rotation.
- 2 years certified controls experience preferred (e.g., Trane, Metasys, Siemens, etc.).
- 2 years Daikin certification.
- 5 years experience; trade school or apprenticeship helpful; journeyman card helpful.
- General knowledge of HVAC controls, building automation systems (BAS), monitoring, and troubleshooting skills.
- Experience working with large‑scale commercial HVAC systems, including hydronic heating and cooling systems, boilers, chillers, and associated controls is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the HVAC field.
- Knowledge of tools, equipment, material and supplies, and hydronics used in HVAC.
- Skill in the use of various trade tools and equipment.
- Skill in making emergency and general repairs and adjustments to equipment used in building and maintenance work.
- Ability to work effectively in a service‑oriented environment subject to frequently changing priorities.
- Problem‑solving and good judgement.
- Ability to understand and apply university and departmental policies and procedures.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Ability to comprehend blueprints and plans.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Ability to perform manual labor and plan operations.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to use judgment and initiative to complete routine work without constant supervision.
