Position Summary

The primary function of a Carpenter is to construct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, wallboard, and concrete, using hand tools and power tools while conforming to local building codes. The Carpenter will also construct built‑in‑place or prefabricated forms for molding concrete structures and study blueprints and diagrams to determine the type and dimension of forms to be constructed.

Responsibilities
  • Study blueprints, sketches, or building plans to determine material types and dimensions.
  • Select specified lumber or other materials.
  • Prepare layout using rules, measuring tape, and framing square.
  • Mark cutting and assembly lines with pencil, chalk, and marking gauge.
  • Shape materials to prescribed measurements with saws, chisels, and planes.
  • Assemble cut and shaped materials and fasten them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue.
  • Construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
  • Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
  • Saw lumber to blueprint dimensions using handsaw or power saw, and nail lumber together to make form panels.
  • Erect built‑in‑place forms or install prefabricated forms on site according to specifications.
  • Insert spreaders and tie rods between opposite faces of forms to maintain dimensions.
  • Anchor and brace forms to fixed objects with nails, bolts, anchor rods, steel cables, planks, and timbers.
  • Bolt up connections as required.
  • Layout and install embeds in concrete form‑work.
  • Proficient in rigging and flagging cranes.
  • Maintain safety standards and adhere to safety policies; pass a trench safety test.
Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must pass a drug test.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Additional requirements for craft workers:
    • Must have own transportation to and from jobsite each work day; a driver’s license is not required.
    • Must provide own hand tools (excluding power tools).
    • May be expected to travel where the project requires, including multi‑state opportunities.
  • Must be safety‑minded and follow all safety policies.

  • Work within precise standards of accuracy.
  • Have basic carpenter tools.
  • Rate information using measurable or checkable standards.
  • Compare and identify differences in size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects.
  • Interpret flat drawings or pictures to understand how they appear as three‑dimensional objects.
