Primary function of an Equipment Mechanic:

The Equipment Mechanic performs skilled work involving the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of heavy construction equipment. This role supports jobsite operations by ensuring all equipment is functioning safely and efficiently and is responsible for both routine servicing and advanced mechanical repairs in the field.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Perform inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on heavy equipment including cranes, excavators, dozers, pile hammers, generators, and forklifts.
  • Conduct field service repairs and scheduled maintenance on project sites.
  • Identify and report equipment issues beyond basic maintenance and coordinate with mechanics as needed.
  • Diagnose and repair powertrain components, suspension systems, electrical systems, hydraulic pumps, and attachments.
  • Complete brake work and DOT-related repairs on commercial vehicles.
  • Maintain accurate documentation including inspection records, work orders, and time sheets.
  • Keep work area and equipment clean and organized.
  • Demonstrate and promote a Safety 1st mindset at all times by reporting near misses and addressing unsafe conditions.
  • Understand and follow all DOT regulations related to mechanic truck operation.

Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience as an equipment mechanic (heavy equipment, not automotive).
  • Welding and electrical experience required.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with cranes, compressors, excavators, pile hammers, forklifts, and similar equipment.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license. CDL preferred.
  • Must provide own hand tools (power tools provided).
  • Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift and carry 50–90 lbs frequently.
  • Regularly stoop, bend, crouch, stretch, and climb.
  • Stand and work for at least 8 hours per day in outdoor environments.
  • Must safely climb on and off heavy mobile equipment.
  • Must be able to enter confined spaces and excavations up to 15 feet deep.
  • Must maintain alertness to surroundings including equipment operation and personnel movements.
  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Exposure to construction-related substances such as grease, oils, concrete, diesel, and dust.
  • Regular work near heavy equipment and active machinery.
  • Noise levels and site conditions vary day to day.

REQUIREMENTS: ALL Applicants must be:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Able to pass a Drug Test
  • Legally eligible to work in the US

Additional Requirements for Craft workers:

  • Must have own transportation to and from jobsite every work day (driver's license required).
  • Must provide own hand tools (excluding power tools).
  • May be expected to travel where the project requires (multi-state opportunities).
