Position: Highway Maintenance Worker II - Heavy Equipment Operator (61035247)
Location: Columbia

Job Responsibilities

  • Operates heavy-duty excavators to clean roadside ditches, excavate trenches for pipe installation, install drainage pipe, and load trucks with fill material.
  • Operates motor graders in ditching, shoulder maintenance, road grading, driveway installation, and snow and ice removal operations.
  • Operates front‑end loaders and backhoes to clean drainage ditches and install sideline and crossline pipe.
  • Operates dump trucks when hauling equipment and materials to and from job sites.
  • Operates dump trucks equipped with specialized attachments during emergency operations and inclement weather events.
  • Assists with emergency and inclement weather operations, which may require extended work hours, rotating shifts, or 12‑hour shifts.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

  • One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
  • Attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
  • Physical demands: ability to bend, stoop, reach, twist, climb, balance, kneel, push, pull, grasp, and manipulate objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material; lift up to 50 lbs.; walk for extended periods, traverse rough uneven terrain, work in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural hazards; often required to work outside normal schedule, especially during inclement weather and emergencies; frequent exposure to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
  • May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
