Job Responsibilities
At District One Bridge Maintenance, operators work specialized equipment that may include but is not limited to boom trucks, hydraulically operated bridge scaffolds, pile hammers, vibratory hammers, and tractor‑trailer 5th‑wheel combinations (varying manual transmissions and trailer styles). Responsibilities include the removal, construction, and maintenance of bridges in District One while maintaining certifications and medical examinations required by ASME B30.5 safety standards.
Workers must perform skilled bridge maintenance functions and operate heavy equipment such as backhoes and excavators. Knowledge of various types of construction equipment hauled to and from work sites is required. Crane rigging and signaling duties must be performed to ensure loads moved by crane are safe and properly secured, with the required crane rigging and signaling qualification. Workers assist in multiple bridge repair tasks, including concrete spall repair, bridge joint repairs, pile repair, and bridge rail repair, using common power tools such as drills and saws.
Under limited supervision, workers construct wood forms and complete other miscellaneous carpentry projects. Welding tasks—including arc and MIG welding—and operation of oxygen/acetylene cutting torches for maintenance and construction work are required. Workers assist and train others in the use and operation of levels, laser levels, grade rods, and other surveying tools for layout of construction and maintenance projects. Construction and maintenance records for piles and surveys must be maintained, and the ability to calculate pile bearing with limited supervision is required.
and Additional Requirements
- Two (2) years of related work experience, or an approved acceptable equivalence.
- Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required upon entry to the position.
- Attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Workers must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. The position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
Workers may be required to work outside of the normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequent exposure to outside environments in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis is expected.
Workers may be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
