Construction Technician I

Job Summary

The Construction Tech is responsible for monitoring service drop installation activities and schedule. Locates underground cable plant and utilities in support of construction, rebuilds and existing upgrades. Interprets service orders, construction sheets, engineering prints and system maps to accurately perform tasks. Reports system mapping discrepancies discovered during work activities. Will work closely with local electric company and other construction crews. Must be able to use tools and equipment and ensure all are in good working order

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Locate underground cable plant and utilities in support of construction, rebuilds and existing upgrades. Utilize locating equipment and follow procedures to ensure accurate locates. Mark located utilities according to set standards.
  • Interprets service orders, constructions sheets, engineering prints, reads and understands utility maps, prints, aerial imagery and system maps to accurately locate underground facilities and to place cable.
  • Splice fiber cables for new service drop installs. Maintain and repair fiber optic lines.
  • Maintain cable system by testing to locate trouble, opening cable to repair or replace defective sections and closing and sealing cable.
  • Identifies cable counts and prepares fiber cables for splicing.
  • Completes required paperwork.
  • Assists in correcting system mapping discrepancies discovered during work activities by reporting to supervisor.
  • Manage 811 Positive Response System.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned by management*.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of telecommunication construction and cable installation practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of voice communications and digital technology.
  • Knowledge of state and federal safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of RUS practices and standards.
  • Knowledge of company products and services.
  • Knowledge of company policies and procedures.
  • Skill in operating service equipment including splicing equipment and materials, pedestals, marking materials, cable reel trailers and various hand tools and testing equipment.
  • Ability to communicate with co-workers and various business contacts in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as maps, staking sheets, and operating and maintenance instruction manuals.
  • Ability to operate and maintain utility locating equipment.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively function as a team player.
  • Ability to drive extensively, with repeated in/out of vehicle.
  • Ability to walk several miles per day.
  • Ability to communicate with customers regarding locating or service installation needs.
  • Ability to work overtime when required/scheduled. Overtime and callback work will be necessary on occasion.
Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements:

Valid driver’s license required. High School diploma or equivalent plus one to three years of technical training.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous facility maintenance experience preferred.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to work during normal business hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods, enter and exit the vehicle multiple times per day while traveling to various work sites.
