Position: Highway Maintenance Worker II - Medium Equipment Operator (61036777)
Location: Columbia

Responsibilities

  • Operates medium equipment such as belt loader, skid steer, and tandem dump truck.
  • Performs skilled manual labor and operates medium duty equipment in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system.
  • Grading, installing driveways, or performing work on the roadway shoulder.
  • Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists.
  • Picks up litter, debris, and dead animals.
  • Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, including operating medium or heavy‑duty equipment.
  • May include availability for extended working hours or 12‑hour shifts.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Six months of related work experience or an approved equivalent.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Must attain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six months of placement.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, twist, climb, balance, kneel, push, pull, grasp and manipulate objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
  • May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental‑related emergencies.
  • Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
