Bus Monitors assist the driver with loading, unloading and student management on the school bus.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Create a positive environment for students on the bus.
- Ensure safety of students during boarding and exiting the bus.
- Ensure that all child passengers are in appropriate safety restraint systems and seatbelts, if applicable.
- Operate lift and secure wheelchairs in tie‑down systems, if applicable.
- Assist the driver in maintaining safety on the bus in route and while the bus is parked at bus stops.
- Follow District policies regarding student control and contact with parents and the public.
- Prepare for and assist with emergency evacuations.
- Handle emergency situations calmly and quickly.
- Perform first aid or emergency assistance.
- Report problems or equipment malfunctions.
- Report incidents that affect the safety of students.
- Attend scheduled meetings and safety programs.
- Complete accurate records as required by District policies and procedures.
- Attend work regularly.
- Occasionally perform work beyond a standard 40‑hour work week when workload requires.
- Other duties may be assigned as needed.
- Attend staff meetings.
- Attend in‑service trainings.
- Report road and other hazards as necessary.
All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily with minimum supervision. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
- Education and/or
Experience:
High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). - Abilities: Promotion of positive communication, relate to children and adults of varying backgrounds, maintain order on the bus, recognize malfunctions, administer first aid, learn bus route, think clearly and solve problems, read directions and basic correspondence.
- Physical Abilities: Frequently lift and transfer 10‑50 pounds; occasionally over 50 pounds; assist special‑needs students; maintain required records; arm‑hand and leg‑foot dexterity; visual acuity including depth perception; sit for extended periods; hearing sufficient for traffic and listening; read and write at a level that permits safe management of duties.

Skills:

Basic arithmetic including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, whole numbers, common fractions, decimals. - Reasoning Ability: Applies common sense to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form and deals with problems involving several concrete variables.

General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use email. - Other
Skills and Abilities:
Communicate appropriately with students, teachers, parents and community members; prioritize work tasks; train others in completing tasks. - Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid First Aid Card.

Thorough knowledge of safe bus practices, bus operation and safety, laws and regulations related to pupil transportation, first aid practices, and good communication skills.
