Job Responsibilities
Operate a combination tractor with side‑mounted tractor mower to perform vegetation management activities in Richland County. Operate a tandem truck to haul hand tools and equipment to clear trees and brush along right‑of‑way, improving sight distance and appearance. Coordinate placement of traffic control devices to set up a maintenance work zone in accordance with the South Carolina Department of Transportation Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide, warning motorists.
Supervise inmates in labor‑intensive highway maintenance using limb saws, chainsaws, and brush chipper to remove unwanted or dangerous vegetation. Make minor roadside repairs on small‑engine tools such as weeding machines and blowers. Change blades on slope mowers, install chain guards on mower decks, replace tires, and replace hydraulic lines on mowers. Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations, including operating medium or heavy‑duty equipment.
Work extended hours or 12‑hour shifts as required.
- Six (6) months of related work experience, or an approved acceptable equivalence.
- A valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Authority to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, traversing rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal hours, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental‑related emergencies.
Frequently exposed to outside environments in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
Additional working conditions may include overtime, night shifts, and weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
