Job DescriptionPosition Title: Special Education Bus Driver/Substitute Bus Driver

SUMMARYUnder limited supervision, operates a school bus equipped to transport students with medical, behavioral, physical, and developmental, disabilities. Ensures the safe and timely transportation of students to and from school and program sites. Must be compassionate and be able to work collaboratively with bus monitors, school staff, and families to support individualized needs and district safety standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Operates a school bus in accordance with state laws, district policies and transportation safety regulations.
- Transports students with specialized medical and behavioral needs, ensuring their safety and dignity while complying with individualized plans (IEPs, BIPs, Health Plans etc.).
- Performs and documents proper pre-trip and post-trip inspections, ensuring the bus and all adaptive equipment is safe and operational.
- Attends scheduled safety meetings/in-services conducted by district transportation personnel and/or state transportation officials at various intervals throughout each school year.
- Uses calm, patient, and supportive behavior-management strategies, partnering with the monitor to implement approved de-escalation practices.
- Maintains accurate student counts, seating charts, time logs, and any other required documentation.
- Safely load, unload and secure students requiring wheelchairs, harnesses, car seats, lifts, ramps, and/or any other specialized equipment.
- Communicate effectively with monitors, school staff, supervisors and parents while maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Immediately report incidents, student medical concerns, unsafe conditions, or equipment malfunctions to the Transportation Supervisor.
- Follows assigned routes and schedules notifying Supervisor of any delays or route hazards.
- Performs practice drills or actual emergency bus evacuations as required.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Transportation Supervisor, Assistant Director or Director.
At least 18 years of age. High school diploma or GED preferred, valid driver’s license and at least 12 months licensed driving experience with a class D, E, F, or G license. Must have no more than four (4) current points against driving record. Must have had no more than 4 points in the previous year. License shall not have been suspended at any time in the previous year.
Physical examination required prior to initial certification and/or re-certification. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License and a School Bus Driver Certificate.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESSupervises students while transporting them.
LANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to read a limited number of two and three syllable words and to recognized similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLSAbility to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
REASONING ABILITYAbility to interpret and apply common sense understanding in carrying out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work related issues and problems.
