Deputy Auditor – Elections & Road Districts

This position is located in Custer, SD. Relocation or commute required. Custer County is currently accepting applications for a full-time Deputy Auditor – Elections & Road Districts. This position is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, dependable, and ready to support a wide range of county operations, including voter registration, election administration, County Commission support, road district administration, financial tracking, and general office operations.

The ideal candidate will be organized, adaptable, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. Strong communication skills, excellent customer service, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment are essential. The successful candidate must be able to maintain confidentiality while working with sensitive election, financial, and personnel information. This is a full-time position with a Monday–Friday schedule (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM), starting at $19.04 per hour, with a comprehensive county benefits package, paid leave, and opportunities for professional growth within county government.

The position reports to the County Finance Officer.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Registering voters, maintaining voter registration records, processing absentee ballots, and assisting with all aspects of county, state, and federal elections.
  • Creating and managing elections within the South Dakota election management system, including candidate setup, ballot preparation, legal notices, and election reporting.
  • Ordering ballots and election supplies, coordinating polling locations, programming and testing voting equipment, and recruiting, hiring, scheduling, and training election workers.
  • Maintaining election records and ensuring compliance with South Dakota election laws and records retention requirements.
  • Providing administrative support to the County Commissioners, including scheduling, meeting preparation, document management, and other administrative duties.
  • Assisting Road Districts with organization, elections, boundary questions, and other administrative matters.
  • Tracking and maintaining county vehicle titles and inventory, coordinating vehicle insurance coverage, and preparing insurance renewal documentation.
  • Providing exceptional customer service by assisting the public, County departments, elected officials, and outside agencies in person, by phone, email, and other forms of communication.
  • Processing mail, maintaining electronic and paper filing systems, ordering office supplies, and preparing official correspondence, reports, and meeting documents.
  • Assisting with school and township fund apportionments, payroll processing, employee benefit administration, and other financial support functions.
  • Assisting the Treasurer's Office with cash counting and financial reconciliation as needed.
  • Maintaining department procedures, job manuals, and administrative records.
  • Attending training opportunities related to elections, county government, records management, and professional development.
  • Performing a variety of office support duties and assisting with special projects and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED required;
Associate degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Public Administration, Office Administration, or a related field preferred. One (1) year or more of clerical, administrative, bookkeeping, payroll, customer service, or office support experience preferred. Government, election administration, finance, accounting, or records management experience is a plus. Knowledge of South Dakota election laws, road district administration, or local government operations is beneficial. Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn specialized election and county software systems.

Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail, accuracy, and recordkeeping. Ability to prioritize multiple assignments while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to establish positive working relationships with coworkers, elected officials, outside agencies, and the public. Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including sitting, standing, walking, lifting up to 25 pounds, and handling election materials and office equipment.

This position is primarily performed in a professional office environment with frequent interaction with the public. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required during election cycles to support election preparation and administration. Custer County is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
