JOB TITLE:
Building Assistant Principal
JOB SUMMARY:
This position assists the building principal in providing leadership and management necessary to administer and supervise all programs, policies, and activities of the school to ensure high quality educational experiences and services for the students in a safe and enriching environment.

WORK PERIOD: As defined in contract
REPORTS TO: Superintendent, Building Principal
WORKS WITH: Administrators, certified staff, classified staff
SUPERVISES: Staff members assigned to his/her building
Position Requirements- Minimum of Master’s degree in an approved program that qualifies for principal certification at the assigned level with the State of South Dakota.
- Current, valid South Dakota administrator certificate with appropriate principal endorsement at the assigned level.
- Five years’ teaching experience.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires constant hand-eye/mind-eye coordination, hearing; intermittent walking, talking, writing. Frequent keyboarding and repetitive motions with wrists, fingers, and hands are required.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Usually works indoors in a climate-controlled environment. Some duties may occasionally be performed outdoors or away from school.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of the best educational practices and effective school research. The ability to use a computer for word processing, spreadsheets and data entry.

Vision and Goals
Functions include:
- Establish specific and measurable goals and objectives related to student achievement.
- Review and monitor the school’s vision, mission, goals and school improvement plans to ensure high expectations for student learning and continuous improvement.
- Ensure that the school’s identity drives decisions and informs the culture of the school.
Instructional Leadership
Functions include:
- Assist in the promotion, facilitation, and utilization of the effective use of data from multiple sources to inform instruction and evaluate student performance to support effective instruction, taking a leadership role where appropriate.
- Lead and support staff in acquiring, planning, and implementing research based instructional strategies and technologies that advance the school’s mission and vision and meet the needs of all learners.
- Assist Principal in the development and implementation of a specific plan for professional development for instructional staff informed by teacher evaluation, student performance data, and school improvement goals.
- Ensure that instructional content is aligned to state/content standards and district curriculum.
- Monitor student achievement and work with the teachers to improve student performance.
School Operations & Security
Functions include:
- Participate in the management of the school budget, aid in the determination of staff assignments and hire for vacancies and distribute technological resources to address student learning needs.
- Participate in the supervision and evaluation of staff fairly and consistently in accordance with state and district guidelines and provide them with timely and constructive feedback focused on improvement.
