TRIO Talent Search at the University of South Dakota has an opening for a full‑time 10‑month advisor position serving the Todd County and White River Schools in Mission and White River, South Dakota. This onsite role assists Talent Search participants in achieving their educational goals.
Responsibilities- Maintain cooperative relationships with target schools and local communities through regular visits.
- Work in community schools 3–4 days per week and meet with participants weekly in class, small groups, or individual visits.
- Plan and carry out activities designed to help students graduate from high school and enroll in postsecondary education.
- Provide academic assistance including study skills, goal‑setting, and tutoring as needed.
- Collect and disseminate information about institutions, financial aid, admissions, housing, and assistance programs.
- Arrange campus visits to colleges for participants.
- Be available for parent meetings via letters, visits, or conferences.
- Maintain records and student files documenting assistance and counseling.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in education, social services, counseling, business administration, or a related field. - Experience working with students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Knowledge of Native American and disadvantaged student populations and postsecondary requirements.
- Strong communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license (to attend staff meetings and professional development).
- Good computer skills.
- Ability to apply educational models and effective teaching practices in the classroom.
