Reporting to the Project Environmental Manager and working closely with Construction and Project Management teams, the successful candidate for the Environmental Specialist role is responsible for supporting the day-to-day implementation of the project environmental management program for a transmission line construction project in Nebraska, US.
The Environmental Specialist provides a strong field presence, supports internal constructions teams with practical environmental guidance, and assists in proactively identifying, documenting, and addressing environmental risks and non-compliances. This role plays a key part in maintaining environmental compliance, supporting incident response, documenting environmental compliance, and contributing to effective environmental performance through project construction, reclamation, and close-out.
Essential Job FunctionsThe responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:
- Support the implementation of the project-specific environmental management program in accordance regulatory approvals, permits, client requirements, and corporate environmental standard
- Conduct routine environmental field inspections in a construction setting to support compliance with environmental permits, approvals, plans, and other commitments
- Provide day-to-day, field level environmental guidance to construction supervision, crews, and subcontractors to support environmental compliance
- Developing and implementing project environmental plans to ensure that work is completed in compliance with all relevant client requirements as well as provincial and/or federal regulations
- Verify, document, and evaluate the implementation of environmental mitigation measures related but not limited to erosion and sedimentation control, spill prevention, wildlife, vegetation, access, and reclamation in compliance with the project's environmental management framework and industry best management practices
- Proactively identify, document, and report environmental non-conformances, deficiencies, and emerging risks and support the implementation, tracking, and strategy of corrective actions under the direction of the Project Environmental Manager
- Prepare and maintain accurate and timely environmental reports, inspections, photographs, and other documents as required
- Lead or support environmental incidents investigations, write and distribute incident reports, and track completion of corrective actions and reporting to closeout
- Participate in environmental orientations, training, and attending morning tailboard and planning meetings, as required
- Coordinate closely with the Project Environmental Manager, construction and project management, construction crews, and client environmental representatives to communicate environmental requirements, document field observations, and report on compliance status
- Perform other duties as required in support of project and corporate environmental objectives
- Education and Experience
- Diploma or bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental studies, biology, ecology, agrology, rangeland management, natural resources management, or a closely related field
- Entry-level and recent graduates are encouraged to apply; prior experience on construction or infrastructure projects is considered a strong asset but not strictly required
- 0-3 years of relevant experience within the construction industry, including field monitoring, environmental inspections, construction support, or similar roles
- Previous exposure to linear infrastructure development (power transmission, pipeline, roads, rail) or civil construction is an asset
