Responsibilities
- Actively participates in many phases of photovoltaic projects, including, but not limited to: site investigations; CAD production; design and contract documents; basic specifications; and the construction administration process.
- Responsible for full project design, and for quality of work in developing final construction documents as well as concept designs or Design Development drawings.
- Experience designing both Commercial & Industrial (C&I) and utility-scale ground mount PV systems (5MW+)
- Exposure to BESS design is strongly preferred; ability to integrate BESS into PV system design is a plus.
- Design Ownership & Accountability
- Serve as the design authority for assigned projects
- Independently develop complete electrical designs without senior oversight or technical review
- Take full responsibility for accuracy, constructability, and code compliance of issued drawings and calculations
- Make final engineering decisions on system design, equipment selection, and code interpretation
- Deliver client-ready, permit-ready, and IFC packages without reliance on others for technical validation
- Work with junior staff to provide prepare project design drawings/calculations.
- This role requires the ability to operate as a self-sufficient senior engineer, where designs are produced and issued with minimal to no senior technical review
- Participates where requested in client interface and meetings.
- Ability to work within established budgets
- Ability to independently complete the following engineering tasks:
- Solar photovoltaic design
- Detailed PV Syst calculations
- Design drafting of construction documents using AutoCAD
- Voltage calculations and conductor / raceway sizing
- Short Circuit calculations
- Electrical distribution design and single line preparation
- Code review
- Preparation of specifications
- Perform and validate protective device coordination and relay settings (where applicable)
- Lead interconnection design strategy, including utility requirements and point of interconnection design
- Develop medium voltage collection system design for ground mount projects
- Evaluate and mitigate system risks (voltage rise, thermal limits, fault duty, etc.)
- Minimum 5 years commercial solar experience with a BS in Electrical Engineering
- Proven experience delivering complete electrical design packages independently, not solely as part of a reviewed team structure
- Experience working in environments where the engineer is responsible for final design issuance to clients or AHJs
- Ability to defend design decisions directly with clients, utilities, and reviewers.
- Demonstrated ability to provide quality construction documents working in a senior level design role, while mentoring junior level design staff
- Strong AutoCAD skills and knowledge of software
- Computer proficiency, strong in MS Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook) as well as production related software (ETAP, PV Syst) and equipment
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Produces permit-ready drawing sets with minimal revisions required from clients or AHJs
- Anticipates and resolves design issues before construction
- Operates with confidence in making engineering decisions without escalation
- Serves as a technical leader and resource for junior staff
