Position: Field ESH Coordinator IV (3 Year Term)

Job Summary

The expected hiring range for this position is: $-$. Pay offered will be based on scope, responsibilities, qualifications, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

The LBNF/DUNE Field ESH Coordinator reports to the LBNF/DUNE Project ESH Deputy Manager and coordinates closely with the LBNF/DUNE Far Detector & Cryogenics (FDC) Project Manager, the FDC Installation Manager, the systems engineering team, and engineers in the FDC subproject. Under limited direction, the coordinator supports execution of the Fermilab ESH program for FDC at SURF.

Location:

Lead, South Dakota.

Responsibilities
  • Work 1 mile underground, rotating two 10‑hour shifts per day, 4 days per week and a weekend shift.
  • The shift schedule may change throughout various work phases.
  • Cooperatively monitor the project’s ESH policies and procedures for LBNF and DUNE subprojects to assure compliance with project, Fermilab, and SURF requirements, all applicable local, state and federal regulations, and DOE orders.
  • Initiate, perform and document daily jobsite inspections with emphasis on hazard recognition, unsafe behaviors, corrective actions, and lessons learned.
  • Assist ESH matters in project plans, including strategizing technical solutions and alternatives.
  • Support the development of the LBNF/DUNE construction and detector installation work planning and control process, including the Build Plan and Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) process with the Far Detector & Cryogenics team.
  • Support ESH program audits, incident investigations, and trend analysis to identify areas of concern and implement improvements.
  • Report ESH issues—including incidents, injuries, and near‑miss incidents—to the LBNF/DUNE Deputy ESH Manager. Support compliance with accident/incident reporting and investigation requirements.
  • Prepare reports for the LBNF/DUNE Deputy ESH Manager based on observations, data interpretation, and current regulations. Routinely interact with Fermilab, SURF, DOE, project staff, and stakeholders.
  • Offer guidance and interpretations on ESH matters to the LBNF/DUNE Deputy ESH Manager and Installation Managers.
  • Participate as a member of the weekly ESH Stakeholders meeting.
  • Participate in daily shift start‑of‑work planning meetings.
  • Participate in weekly FDC Planning Meetings.
  • Participate in weekly ESH facility walkthroughs with Project, Fermilab, SURF, and DOE ESH oversight staff.
  • Abide by and perform all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices relevant to this position and work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Attributes for Success
  • Bachelor’s degree in ESH and/or QA discipline or related field and a minimum of 7+ years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of policies, regulations, specifications, and requirements governing health and safety, OSHA and other regulatory agencies.
  • Strong knowledge in formalized work planning and control processes, including a task‑driven hazard analysis process.
  • Demonstrated technical and analytical problem‑solving skills.
  • Experience with incident tracking databases.
  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations and recommend corrective measures; good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to work in a high production environment (50+ hours per week, including nights and weekends).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to enable effective interaction with project, Fermilab, and stakeholder personnel.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify trends and establish proactive corrective actions.
  • Ability to use MS Office and document management systems.
  • Ability to work independently.

This is an onsite role, and the candidate must be able to work from the Lead, SD project location.
