The financial advisor position at Northwestern Mutual is primarily commission-based. During the first year, compensation is mainly derived from commissions, with some available incentives to provide more predictable income. Advisors have the opportunity to earn through various revenue streams, including first-year commissions, renewal commissions, bonuses, and fees from investment products and services, as well as expense allowances. Income is based on production, and there is no guaranteed level of income.

Advisors receive both W2 and 1099 income, where insurance commissions are treated as W2 income, and other compensations such as investment commissions and allowances are treated as 1099-NEC (non-employee compensation).
