SummaryThe primary purpose of work is custodial, janitorial, and outdoor landscape work with a preventative maintenance emphasis such as small plumbing and electrical repairs, grass cutting, line trimming, sweeping, washing windows and walls from ladders or manlifts, dusting and polishing museum artifacts, interpretive panels, and providing maintenance and cleaning to trash receptacles. Light duty motor vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds are operated on a regular basis.
Responsibilities- Perform custodial, janitorial, and outdoor landscape work with a preventative maintenance emphasis.
- Conduct small plumbing and electrical repairs, grass cutting, line trimming, sweeping, washing windows and walls from ladders or manlifts.
- Dust and polish museum artifacts and interpretive panels.
- Maintain and clean trash receptacles.
- Operate light duty motor vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds to transport personnel, material, or equipment to work sites.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
- Participation in Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- Wear uniform in compliance with National Park Service uniform standards; uniform allowance provided.
- Minimum age 18 years or 16 years with high school graduation or equivalent, or vocational training, or current secondary school enrollment with part‑time employment.
- Veteran preference: appointment restricted by law (5 U.S.C. 3310) to Veterans who are preference eligible if such applicants are available.
- Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
- Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (other than blueprints).
- Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment; dexterity and safety.
- Vehicle operation.
- Work practices (including keeping things neat, clean, and in order).
- Proficiency in operating floor scrubbers, floor buffers, floor strippers, hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, saws, and using light hand and power cleaning custodial tools.
The work requires moderately heavy physical effort and involves lifting and moving objects over 40 pounds, occasionally objects weighing over 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Custodial workers must move and control heavy equipment, carry and set up ladders and scaffolding, and work from ladders and scaffolds.
Working ConditionsApproximately 50% of the work is indoors with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. The remaining work is outdoors in various weather conditions ranging from hot temperatures to below freezing conditions. The incumbent is exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors. Care is required to avoid serious injuries when working on ladders and scaffolds.
PM/Custodial Workers do work in artificial and natural light when outdoors.
