The VISTAs will provide capacity development to a rotating set of projects that touch nearly every aspect of healthcare delivery, from pain management to hepatitis C treatment. Community outreach initiatives include building the capacity of public health outreach clinics, writing and managing grants, and connecting students interested in healthcare careers to mentors and opportunity pathways. Ameri Corps VISTA members participate in all aspects of the MGH programs, with a focus on projects that support the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and the area community.
The VISTA impact on capacity development is substantial, with over 10 full‑time positions sustaining projects started through the work of past VISTA teams. To maximize their impact on developing capacity, Ameri Corps VISTA members split time between the health system (at the Indian Health Service) and tribal programs. It is a fantastic position for anyone interested in a future in medical school, health care administration, or public health.
Volunteers work closely with the academic physicians who help run the partnership in the community.
