Position Highlights SUMMARY

The Nurse in this position coordinates patient care and staffing on a daily basis. This individual is responsible for assisting with care planning, procedures, staff education, nursing staff and patient scheduling, supply/equipment ordering and management, nursing daily direction and leadership, work with and report directly to Director of Patient Services. In addition, it is expected that this individual provide care/service in accordance with regulatory and accrediting agencies’ standards in a manner that reflects St.

Michael’s Hospital Avera (SMHA) standard of quality patient/resident care and commitment to Service Excellence.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Within the limitations and privileges outlined in the South Dakota Nurse Practice Act and currently accepted professional standards the Registered Nurse:

  • Demonstrates Professional Accountability - performing technical procedures necessary for the job responsibilities of a Nurse in a safe, effective, efficient, legal, compassionate and professional manner. This includes communication, mentoring, acceptance of criticism, professional development, participation in organizational activities and stewardship of the hospital’s resources.
  • Demonstrate accountability, attendance, and reliability - actively working to create an environment based on trust, freeing people to perform to their maximum potential, and promoting individual and mutual accountability. This includes trustworthy completion of time cards and utilization of hospital resources, participation in unit meetings and in‑services, professional appearance, willingness to volunteer for extra duty as needed, acceptance of responsibility, flexibility, and adaptation to change.
  • Demonstrates behavior compatible with the values of Avera - continuously seeks to increase the quality and value of services provided to our customers, including patients, families, co‑workers, physicians, accrediting bodies, suppliers payers, and etc. This includes a display of excellent work, friendliness and attention to customer wants and needs, goal orientation, and organizational loyalty to SMHA within the organization and the greater community.

  • Utilizes Critical Thinking Skills - demonstrates problem‑solving, decision making skills, and priority setting as necessary to perform the job duties at the professional nursing level. This includes maintaining current knowledge of and adherence to hospital/department policies and procedures, solving problems constructively, demonstrating loyalty and teamwork, responding to unanticipated events calmly and appropriately, and making appropriate decisions.
  • Must be able to meet all physical demands.
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts.
TECHNICAL/PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES
  • Utilizes the nursing process of assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating all nursing care provided.
  • Acts as a patient/family advocate and intervenes if necessary to ensure that patient care is not compromised.
  • Assesses the patient, records significant conditions and reactions and notifies supervisor or physician appropriately. Monitors follow‑up and provides further intervention as needed.
  • Initiates, provides, or delegates patient/family and staff teaching at a level of expertise and documents appropriately, noting the recipients’ participation and response.
  • Identifies problems/concerns and assists in developing resolutions in a positive, constructive manner.
