Job Summary

The primary purpose of the position is to perform recurring building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties and to assist journeymen and other higher graded maintenance workers. Incumbent utilizes knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts. The duties described may not fully match every task performed, but if the general intent is met this position is appropriate.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and masonry based on project needs.
  • Lead a crew of lower‑level co‑workers (laborers) in the construction, repair, and upkeep of government facilities, boundary fences, roads, culverts, corrals, and trails.
  • Perform tasks such as window repair, door repair, wall and ceiling patching, roof repair and replacement, fixture replacement, plumbing repair or replacement, floor installation, siding repairs, interior and exterior preparation, painting, insulating, and general home maintenance.
  • Operate and maintain equipment and vehicles including tractors, bobcat skid steers, backhoes, pickup trucks with trailers, air compressors, pneumatic hammers, plate compactors, steel‑faced compactors, motorized brooms, snow plows, and pressure washers.
  • Digs holes, mixes and pours concrete, installs drainage pipe, cleans culverts and auto gates, and instructs laborers in hand tools such as hammers, rakes, shovels, post‑hole diggers, wire stretchers, axes, saws, and wrenches.
  • Execute tasks that require heavy physical effort, including lifting and carrying materials up to 75 lbs, working on ladders and scaffolding, and operating in temperatures ranging from 100°F to –10°F in windy, snowy conditions.
  • Participate in safety meetings, Job Hazard Analysis, and development of job SOPs to ensure safe work processes.

Conditions of Employment

  • Uniform:
    Must wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Minimum age requirements: 18 years old, or 16–17 years old with high‑school graduation, vocational training, school authority statement, or enrollment in a secondary school with part‑time employment.

    Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is covered by a union.
Qualifications
  • Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision (screen‑out).
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, and materials.
  • Technical practices and use of measuring instruments.
  • Vehicle operation experience.
Screen Outs

Experience that demonstrates the ability to independently perform the full range of maintenance worker tasks without more than normal supervision in at least two of the following trades: carpentry, painting, plumbing, roofing, electrical, cement finishing, masonry, wastewater plant operator, and/or water plant operator. Must troubleshoot and take initiative to solve problems.

Driver’s License

A valid driver's license and motor vehicle operator’s license with driving record are required. Certified driving records from all states must be submitted at the applicant’s own expense.
