Requirements
  • Education:

    High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience Desired:
    Some knowledge of vehicle/bus mechanics.
  • Physical:
    Constant hand‑eye and mind‑eye coordination, walking, standing, frequent bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, stooping, turning, crouching, repetitive motions with wrists, hands, fingers; ability to lift 50–75 pounds intermittently. Reasonable accommodations may be made.
  • Other:
    Current, valid South Dakota Commercial Driver’s License and good driving record; ability to pass a Department of Transportation physical; successful completion of annual Bus Driver Training; must be acceptable to the insurance company; ability to work cooperatively, follow directions, possess good organizational skills, schedule drivers, establish rapport with administrators, staff, students, public; adhere to District’s Policies and Procedures.
Essential Functions and Duties
  • Remain available during all regular bus routes. Adjust to irregular hours and respond to emergency calls.
  • Remain on duty during inclement weather until all buses return from routes.
  • Develop and maintain transportation routes, and schedules for all activities including co‑curricular and extra trips, early dismissals, late starts, special services, staff travel, and summer programming. Inform the business office of any changes and secure substitute drivers when regular drivers are absent.
  • Recruit new bus drivers. Schedule, train, supervise, evaluate, and discipline all transportation personnel.
  • Keep drivers informed of all activity concerning early dismissals, late starts, etc.
  • Monitor video surveillance usage on buses. Keep records of bus conduct notices and seek the assistance of the administration when necessary.
  • Ensure all buses, vehicles, and equipment are in safe and comfortable operating condition. Coordinate maintenance and upkeep of equipment, vehicles, and buses.
  • Administer assigned budgets and demonstrate fiscal responsibility.
  • Keep in communication with the business manager about the condition of the transportation facilities, buses, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Consult with the business manager on the creation of specifications needed for purchases of equipment.
  • Oversee the annual inspection of buses.
  • Issue, collect, and keep record of bus keys, gas keys, and other keys issued to drivers.
  • Ensure that all time sheets and leave requests are accurate and turned in promptly.
  • Follow transportation policies and procedures established by the district and the state.
  • Maintain all necessary documentation to assist in the preparation of the school transportation data as requested by the State of South Dakota.
  • Strive to help promote the safety, health, and comfort of all students within the school district.
  • Promote a positive image of the West Central School District.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
