Water Distribution Operator III

Under general supervision, perform a variety of semi‑skilled tasks in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the water distribution system and related work as required.

Water Distribution Operator III – Full journey level class. Employees at this level perform the full range of duties with only occasional instructions or assistance in new or unusual situations. They are fully aware of operating procedures and policies within the work unit.

Work under general supervision. No supervisory responsibilities.

• Install, maintain, and repair water mains, hydrants, services, valves, detector checks, and backflow prevention devices; dig trenches, lay pipe, and backfill trenches.
• Make minor repairs to water such as replacing dials, glass, and screws.
• Operate power equipment as directed.
• Flush mainlines; chlorinate main lines as directed.
• Assist in inspection and maintenance of elevated water tanks.
• Read meters, turn on and off customer services, answer complaints on water service, collect delinquent bills, and perform water pump operator duties as assigned.
• Work shifts on a 7‑day/24‑hour basis to meet operational needs of the Water Division.
• Perform standby functions as required.
• Execute job functions at a journey water distribution level.

Equivalent to an acceptable basic education and three (3) years of experience in water utility operation, maintenance, and repair work.

• Valid Class B California Driver’s License.
• Valid State Water Resource Control Board Distribution Grade III Certificate and Grade II Water Treatment Certificate.

Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the installation and maintenance of water systems and facilities. Ability to use hand and power tools; to follow oral directions; to establish and maintain effective relationships with others.

The physical demands and work environment are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions. Employees frequently wash, sit, and talk or hear; stand for extended periods. Employees may use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; may reach with hands and arms; occasionally climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision and ability to adjust focus. Noise level usually quiet in the office and moderately loud outdoors. Employees occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, traffic, dust, gas, fumes, and chemicals.
