Salary: $43,268.00 to $68,719.00 annually
PVPA has an opportunity for a long‑term substitute health and physical education teacher beginning in August 2026 through November 2026. We are looking for a reflective practitioner who enjoys working with students in middle school and collaborating with colleagues. The ideal candidate is someone who is excited to get creative about how to best use P.E. and Community Wellness as a platform to positively impact school culture and promote student joy as well as student sense of belonging.
This position teaches a high‑interest, high‑energy engaging health and physical education curriculum aligned with the Massachusetts Comprehensive Health Curriculum Framework. The teacher will also foster a positive school culture through activities focused on social‑emotional learning and community building.
The role collaborates with the school culture team, the wellness team, and the school health office to include all strands of health education: physical health, social & emotional health, safety & prevention, and personal & community health. The physical education component emphasizes physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. The health education component includes comprehensive, inclusive sexuality education and other health topics.
The community building component includes community building activities, facilitating circles, and proactive efforts to support a positive school culture through health and wellness for students individually and collectively.
- Teach five blocks (classes) of health and physical education
- Use an anti‑racist, anti‑oppression framework to prepare curricula and instructional materials based on learning objectives
- Ensure the curriculum is inclusive of all students, including a comprehensive, sex‑positive, LGBTQIA+ and disability‑inclusive approach to sexuality education
- Foster body‑positive and body‑inclusive attitudes to physical activity and health
- Collaborate with the school culture team, school counselors, school nurse, and others in designing and delivering curriculum as appropriate
- Draw on community resources for guest speakers and other supplementary class activities when appropriate
- Assess student work and provide timely feedback to students and parents via the Power School online grading system
- Apply PVPA’s standards‑based grading system to report on student course progress and achievement
- Coordinate with special educators to address the diverse needs of all learners
- Supervise students during non‑class time (e.g., lunch) as required
- Attend and participate in regular faculty meetings and school‑wide professional development activities
- Attend and participate in meetings with students and parents/guardians as scheduled, including an evening open house and parent‑teacher conferences
- Participate in school‑wide events that occur during the school day
- Assist with other faculty administrative duties as required
The successful candidate will minimally hold a BA degree, be able to pass a background check (CORI/SORI & Fingerprinting) and be computer literate.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Eligible for "Highly Qualified" teacher status (MA Certified or able to pass Communication & Literacy and PE Subject Matter MTEL exam within one year) or Massachusetts certification as a Health and/or Physical Education Teacher
- Two or more years of experience teaching health and/or physical education in a public or private school or experience managing athletics and/or fitness programs for middle and high school age students
- Ability to teach a variety of courses within the discipline and knowledge of curriculum standards
- Experience with Google Suite and Power School SIS
Salary:
Full time $43,268 to $68,719 annually depending on degree and experience. Additional $1,000 stipend for individuals who hold a DESE license in the subject area.
The 2026‑2027 school year consists of 180 school days plus 7 professional development/curriculum work days and a thirty‑five‑hour work week that includes, on average, three class blocks per day of collaborative/independent work time.
