On-Call, Part Time Companion Driver for Seniors The South Hadley Council
on Aging seeks to add 2-4 individuals to its pool of friendly and reliable Companion Drivers who provide transportation for South Hadley seniors traveling to non-emergency medical appointments throughout Hampshire and Hampden County. As a Council on Aging Companion Driver, you will be responsible for assisting seniors with medical transportation service in your own vehicle. Companion Drivers will escort older adults to their medical appointment and remain at the appointment site throughout the appointment.
If necessary, the driver will transport the senior to a local pharmacy to pick up medication. This is a door-to-door service that begins and ends at the senior’s front door. The successful candidate must be a friendly individual who is organized, detail-oriented, and flexible.
- Provide single-rider, door-to-door transportation to medical appointments, either in or out of town.
- Guide older adults in and out of vehicles and doctor's offices.
- Coordinate by telephone with older adults and Social Service Coordinator to allow for ample time to arrive at the medical appointment, to stay with older adults at the doctor's office, and pick up prescriptions if necessary.
- Keep accurate records of both time and mileage.
The following requirements may be substituted by an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Provides The Necessary Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required To perform the job:- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License as well as a safe, reliable vehicle with valid registration.
- Maintain minimum required personal vehicle insurance coverage: $250,000 per person for bodily injury and $500,000 aggregate per accident.
- Ability to satisfactorily complete background check (CORI, driving record and/or reference checks).
- Possess outstanding driving skills.
- Maintain a professional and approachable demeanor at all times, implementing strong customer service skills to work effectively and tactfully with the public and older adults.
- Accurate record keeping skills.
- Ability to adhere to and respect confidentiality and boundaries.
- Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of work.
This is a part-time, on-call position with a flexible schedule and varying shifts offered typically between Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Shifts are based on driver demand and there are no guaranteed minimum hours per week. This is a grant-funded position with opportunity to renew; continued employment is contingent upon award and availability of funding. This is a FLSA non-exempt, non-union, non-benefited position.
Hourly rate is $15.00/hour with mileage reimbursement.
