Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) is a 70‑bed Primary Stroke Center located in South Central Virginia, serving residents of over seven counties, including North Carolina. The Acute Care unit contains 54 beds divided into medical, telemetry, and surgical. The average nurse‑to‑patient ratio is 1:4, supported by patient‑care technicians, safety associates, unit secretaries, and cardiac monitor technologists. CMH fosters a family‑centered, team‑oriented environment that supports continuing education and career advancement.
ClinicalNurse Roles
Clinical Nurse I – Focuses on prevention, maintenance of wellness, and comfort for patients and families. Administers medications with competency checks and documents age‑specific care. Provides direction and education while beginning to acquire leadership at the unit level.
Clinical Nurse II – Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies them to a specific patient population. Recognizes changes in patient status, mobilizes resources, and assumes greater unit‑level leadership. Performs the same duties as Nurse I with added clinical autonomy.
Clinical Nurse III – Extends clinical knowledge to the unit level and serves as a role model and leader. Anticipates changes in patient situations, provides direction and education, and demonstrates exemplary clinical practice within multidisciplinary plans of care.
Licensure, Certification, and Registration- Current RN licensure in Virginia, or eligibility under the RN Compact.
- BLS (HCP) certification or equivalent (required for ongoing employment).
Required:
- Clinical Nurse I: N/A
- Clinical Nurse II: 12–24 months RN experience
- Clinical Nurse III: 3 years of clinical experience
Preferred:
- Clinical Nurse I:
Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute‑care setting. - Clinical Nurse II & III:
Academic health‑care experience or similar patient populations in acute‑care.
Required: Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a recognized RN program. Registered nurses without a Bachelor’s in Nursing must enroll in an approved RN‑to‑BSN program within two years of hire and complete it within five years, unless grandfathered.
Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or higher. Clinical Nurse III:
Certification in a specialty area.
- Follow documented physician and licensed provider orders.
- Practice within Virginia nursing regulations and the ANA Code of Ethics.
- Adhere to VCUHS policies, procedures, and best practice standards.
- Organize work and delegate toاق RN, LPN, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries,習 etc.
Position Requirements
- Work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays; shift rotation determined by Nurse/Practice Manager.
- Schedules and hours may be adjusted to meet unit needs.
- Lift 20–50 lbs.
- Exposure to hazardous or infectious substances.
- Prolonged standing and sitting; frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing stairs or ladders, overhead reaching.
- Strong recall, reasoning, problem‑solving; hearing, clear speech; legible writing; logical reading.
- Ability to handle emotional demands in a noisy, fast‑paced environment.
