VCU Pauley Heart Center – Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Position

VCU's Pauley Heart Center is expanding access to inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular care at VCU's Community Memorial Hospital. The full‑time APP will manage acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions of new, transitional, and follow‑up patients in both the inpatient and ambulatory setting.

Clinical & Patient Care Responsibilities

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP – NP or PA) provides high‑quality medical and/or surgical patient care.

Responsibilities include:

diagnosing and treating acute and chronic complaints in collaboration with the Attending Physician; performing histories and physicals; ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests; creating treatment plans; prescribing medication; assisting with surgical procedures; counseling patients; and performing invasive procedures defined by the Virginia Board of Medicine. The APP works collaboratively with the medical team to deliver organized, timely, cost‑effective, and quality patient care under a defined departmental scope of practice and state‑approved collaboration with Attending Physicians.

Clinical & Patient Care Responsibilities
Demonstrates mastery of treatment and patient care of the specialty population served. Coordinates patient care across the continuum of services, assesses health status, performs physical examinations, initiates screening and diagnostic tests, assists with surgical procedures, prescribes medication, and provides counseling. Initiates emergency procedures as needed, practices safety and infection control, and makes rounds with attending physicians. Supervises patient‑care staff, documents pertinent data in the medical record, develops treatment plans, and incorporates physical, spiritual, cultural, and psychosocial aspects into patient care.

Explores strategies to reduce length of stay and resource consumption and maintains effective communication with all health‑care team members.

Consultation
Functions as a consultant to other health‑care professionals regarding routine and unusual therapeutic interventions. Acts as a liaison, translator, and negotiator for staff, patients, and families. Collaborates in developing, implementing, communicating, and monitoring multidisciplinary care plans for complex patients. Shares responsibility for patient education and may provide training to residents, fellows, and other staff. Participates in continual assessment and revision of practices and procedures and promotes teamwork through effective communication.

Research
Utilizes current research to develop, implement, and evaluate critical paths and standards of care. Contributes to the profession through participation in research, publications, consultation, and educational activities. Demonstrates knowledge and support for clinical trials within the specialty area.

Ethical Decision Making Skills
Incorporates clinical judgment in ethical decision making, practices the principles of ethics, promotes interdisciplinary collaboration to resolve ethical dilemmas, negotiates and mediates with families, examines patient values, and recognizes patient rights as the foundation for ethical decisions.

Professional Development
Seeks opportunities for growth through organizational affiliations. Collaborates with physicians, allied health professionals, and administration. Assesses learning needs, implements a growth plan, and participates in educational programs, literature reviews, in‑service training, and workshops. Maintains certifications and meets recertification requirements to continue VCUHS privileges.

Miscellaneous Responsibilities
Performs other duties as assigned and/or participates in special projects to support the mission of VCU Health. Provides assistance to team members and accepts alternate assignments as required.

Employment Qualifications

Required Education
Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant Program.
