Overview

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP- NP, PA) provides high-quality medical and/or surgical patient care. This position serves patients with acute and chronic complaints in collaboration with the Attending Physician. The APP provides diagnostic, therapeutic, and/or preventive healthcare services on a Collaborative APP/Physician team. The APP may perform histories and physicals; order and interpret tests; make diagnoses; treat injuries/illnesses; assist with surgical procedures;

counsel patients and/or prescribe medications, and perform invasive procedures defined by the Virginia Board of Medicine. The APP works collaboratively with the medical team to deliver organized, timely, cost-effective, and high-quality patient care. The APP will provide patient care under a defined departmental and state-approved scope of practice with the collaboration of Attending Physician(s).

Performance Expectations
  • Clinical & Patient Care Responsibilities:
    Demonstrates mastery of treatment and patient care of the specialty population served. Coordinates patient care across the continuum through the patient’s trajectory of illness. Assesses health status through history and physical examination, initiates screening, orders or performs diagnostic tests, provides direct patient care, assists with surgical procedures, and prescribes medications or counsels patients. Initiates emergency procedures as needed. Practices safety, environmental and infection control methods.

    Makes rounds with attending physicians as necessary. Supervises and/or coordinates activities of patient care and support staff. Documents all pertinent information in the patient’s medical record. Interprets information from history and physical to develop a treatment plan. Formulates short-term and long-term therapeutic plans considering physical, spiritual, cultural, and psychosocial factors. Seeks to decrease length of stay and resource use within the specialty area.

    Prioritizes health needs of individuals, families, or communities. Maintains effective communication with all health care team members to assure coordinated care. Assists with care coordination between primary and specialty services as needed.
  • Consultation:
    Functions as a consultant to other health care professionals, serves as liaison, translator, and negotiator for staff, patients, and families. Collaborates on the multidisciplinary plan of care for complex patients. Participates in patient education with patients, families, or other caregivers. May provide training to residents, fellows, and other health care staff in the area of specialty. Participates in ongoing assessment and revision of practices and procedures in the specialty area.

    Promotes teamwork through effective communication and feedback. Recognizes the team as integral to outcomes.
  • Research:
    Utilizes current research to develop, implement, and evaluate standards of care for identified patient populations. Contributes to the profession through research, publications, consultations, and/or educational activities. Demonstrates knowledge and support for clinical trials within the specialty area.
  • Ethical Decision Making

    Skills:

    Applies clinical judgment in ethical decision making. Adheres to ethical decision-making principles and promotes interdisciplinary processes to resolve dilemmas. Demonstrates negotiation, mediation, collaboration, compromise, and accommodation to assist families. Considers patient values in treatment decisions and recognizes patient rights as a foundation for ethical decisions.
  • Professional Development:
    Seeks opportunities for professional growth; collaborates with physicians, allied health professionals, and administration. Assesses learning needs and develops a plan for growth. Engages in educational programs, literature, in-service, and workshops. Participates in teaching programs as needed. Maintains competencies and re-certification requirements and appropriate VCU Health privileges.
