Position: Registered Nurse (RN) - Acute Care - Nights

Registered Nurse (RN) - Acute Care - Nights

Three 12‑hour shifts weekly and every third weekend.

The Acute Care unit has 54 beds serving a diverse population and operates within a family‑centered environment.

Clinical Nurse Level Responsibilities

Clinical Nurse I: Integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs. Assists the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. Provides direction, education, and begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level. Delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care.

Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Clinical Nurse II: Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies knowledge to a specific patient population. Assists the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. Recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. Mobilizes resources to meet individualized needs of patient/families. Provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level.

Delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care. Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Clinical Nurse III: Demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies it to a specific patient population. Assists the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. Anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. Provides direction, education, and serves as a role model. Delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care.

Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Licensure & Certification Requirements (Hire)
  • Clinical Nurse I, II, III:
    Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state.
Licensure & Certification Requirements (Continued Employment)
  • Clinical Nurse I, II, III:
    Current RN licensure in Virginia, AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.
Experience Required
  • Clinical Nurse I: N/A
  • Clinical Nurse II: 12 to 24 months RN experience.
  • Clinical Nurse III: 3 years of clinical experience.
Experience Preferred
  • Clinical Nurse I:
    Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting.
  • Clinical Nurse II, III:
    Academic Health Care Experience; experience with similar patient populations in an acute care setting.
Education & Training Required
  • Clinical Nurse I, II, III:
    Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the corresponding state Board of Nursing.
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and complete the program within five years unless grandfathered under previous requirements.
Education & Training Preferred
  • Clinical Nurse I, II, III:
    Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program.
  • Clinical Nurse III:
    Certification in a specialty area.

Independent Actions

Required:

Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders; practices within the regulations governing nursing in Virginia; guided by ANA Code of Ethics and VCUHS policies.

Supervisory Responsibilities (if applicable): Organizes work and delegates and supervises others (RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments.

Additional Position Requirements: Clinicians work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays; shift rotation and schedules will be established with Nurse Manager/Practice Manager; schedules may be adjusted to meet unit requirements.

Age Specific Groups Served: As appropriate based on unit assignment.

Physical Requirements: Lifting 20–50 lbs.; exposure to potentially hazardous substances; prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching; strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking; fast pace environment, able to handle multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, noisy environment.
