Director of English Language Learning

Purpose

The Director of English Language Learning will oversee the provision of high-quality programs for English Learners in South Holland School District 151, including one-way immersion and ESL. The role requires significant time managing state and federal grants for ELLs, overseeing English proficiency assessments, planning professional development and coaching activities for teachers who serve ELLs, consulting with administrators and teachers, coordinating the Parent Teacher Advisory Committee, implementing all requirements and best practices for serving ELLs, promoting cultural awareness and proficiency, supporting family and community engagement, and responding to requests.

Jessica Buckner Administration Center

• Master's degree in Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Administration, ESL or a related field from an accredited college or university
• State of Illinois Professional Educator’s License with Elementary Education, Middle School, High School or equivalent endorsement/qualification
• General Administrative or Principal endorsement and ESL, ENL or Bilingual/ESL endorsement
• Five (5) years of successful experience as a teacher in a public school district
• Three (3) years of successful administrative or leadership experience at the school or district level
• Ability to establish and maintain rapport with diverse individuals and groups including students, parents, teachers, administrators and the community
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish
• Strong knowledge of classroom instruction, language acquisition and its application, and English Language Learning
• Knowledge of and experience with dealing with cultures represented in the community
• Ability to take the initiative, work independently, meet deadlines, follow complex directions and adapt to changing demands, activities and work loads
• Evidence of dependability, integrity, confidentiality, good judgement, and a strong work ethic
• Valid Illinois or Indiana driver’s license with no major violations
• Acceptable results from background checks and TB test

Superintendent of Schools

• Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observation of all Board policies and State and Federal regulations as they apply to English Language Learners.
• Assumes responsibility for the accurate and punctual preparation of all ELL reports.
• Maintains accurate files of all past or currently served students in ELL programs.
• Supervises and manages appropriate state and federal grants.
• Develops and manages the ELL budget in consultation with the Asst. Superintendent/CSBO.
• Supports the work of teachers and staff with English learners in partnership with the school administrators.
• Trains other District staff for the purpose of ensuring their ability to provide appropriate, timely, and effective services to ELLs and their families.
• Formulates ELL training policies, programs, and schedules for instructional, administrative and support staff based on knowledge of identified training needs.
• Consults with administrators, teachers and staff to define training needs.
• Coordinates all matters relating to the organization and conduct of all ELL service delivery in partnership with building administrators.
• Assists in recruiting, screening, and hiring District certified ELL staff.
• Provides input to principals on staff evaluations as needed.
• Conducts meetings and training to keep staff knowledgeable about policy changes, new programs, current best practices, and other pertinent information regarding English Language Learning.
• Maintains open lines of communication among parents, staff, students, administration and regarding special education and other student needs.
• Collaborates with administrators and staff to facilitate relationship building, cultural competency, and organization awareness as it relates to English learners.
• Builds positive connections between community members and schools to encourage mutual understanding and family and community engagement.
