Job Summary/Basic Function
WSU PREP is an academic enrichment summer school for 7-9th grade students. Program Assistants will work closely with teachers, fellow Program Assistants and students to offer a challenging and engaging program. PAs will work on campus Monday – Thursday with students, other PAs and/or teachers. Program curriculum is focused on math, science, engineering and research skills. Program Assistants duties include:
- Assists in planning, preparation and coordination of special WSU PREP learning activities.
- Performs the duties of professional teaching assistants for the WSU PREP class instructor.
- Ensures the safety and appropriate behavior of program participants.
- Attends classes and laboratories with students.
- Tutors students and helps with homework as needed during class times.
- Grades homework and special assignments, quizzes and tests.
- Maintains records of student performance.
- Provides supervision during special events.
- Acts as a near-peer mentor to students.
This position runs from June 1st – July 16th, with mandatory training on Thursday, May 21st and May 26th-29th.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent plus one year of education at an accredited institution in a major or discipline related to the Summary of Duties or an associate’s degree in a discipline related to the Summary of Duties is required.
- Concurrent enrollment credit hours count towards this requirement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Skill in leading classroom discussions/activities.
- Skill in effective verbal and written communication.
- Ability to assess student work according to general instructional standards.
- Ability to supervise 25 middle school and junior high students in a virtual classroom setting.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of student records.
- Ability to tutor Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics with students one-to-one or in small groups.
