Job Description
Senior Technical Manager, Transit & Rail Rolling Stock Engineer role supports the planning, design, integration, and delivery of complex rail and transit systems and rolling stock. This dynamic position involves collaboration across disciplines and requires co‑location work between WSP South Jordan, UT office and client facilities in the Salt Lake City area.
Responsibilities Development of Technical Specifications- Oversee and develop high level vehicle requirements for upcoming procurements
- Develop requirements for rolling stock, both for rehabilitation/refurbishment, as well as new builds
- Determine, as required, need for contract addenda and modifications
- Work closely with other SMEs (civil/track, mechanical) to troubleshoot day‑to‑day issues and support new vehicle acquisitions
- Plan and facilitate interface requirements for various vehicle systems and network infrastructure
- Interact and plan for engagements with Customer Experience specialists during vehicle design process
- Review and make technical recommendations relating to manufacturers’ proposals and plans
- Conduct site visits to manufacturers’ plants and facilities as part of the procurement process
- Establish inspection plans for vehicle manufacturing and delivery process
- Plan and organize industry engagement to stay up to speed on cutting edge technologies
- Plan and organize technical engagements with rolling stock providers during the procurement process
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff
- Support project planning and execution, including scope, schedule, and budget management
- Demonstrate flexibility and leadership in fast‑paced environments with tight deadlines
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical and/or Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience)
- 10+ years of relevant post‑education experience in engineering with prior rolling stock engineering
- Proficient with engineering principles, practices, processes, and design/build on major infrastructure projects
- Proficient with technical computations and calculations applying engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to appropriate regulations
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to engineering and non‑engineering audiences
- Works independently and provides guidance and leadership to mid‑level to senior team members, with strict adherence to QA/QC
- Strong self‑leadership and communication skills with ability to interact persuasively and tactfully with clients, regulators, project managers, and employees at all levels
- Well‑developed critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to apply technical knowledge and reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis, arriving at most effective, economical, and logical solution
- Proficiency with office automation, discipline‑specific design software (Micro Station, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Open Rail), technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol and harassment policies
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project‑specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements
