Senior Drainage Engineer – Transportation Infrastructure
This role leads drainage engineering efforts on complex transportation infrastructure projects, including freeways, interstates, interchanges, and urban and rural highways. The Senior Drainage Engineer performs advanced hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, designs stormwater and erosion control systems, and oversees the production of accurate, compliant plans using Open Roads Designer, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D. This position manages multidisciplinary drainage design teams, ensures rigorous quality control, and serves as a trusted technical liaison for clients, with a strong focus on innovative flood control and sustainable water management solutions.
Responsibilities- Lead drainage engineering teams on transportation projects, including freeways, interstates, interchanges, urban and rural highways, and shared-use facilities.
- Perform detailed hydrologic and hydraulic analyses to support the design and construction of transportation infrastructure, public and private site developments, and flood control projects.
- Develop comprehensive drainage designs, including storm sewers, culverts, detention and water quality facilities, bridge deck drainage, river hydraulics, bridge hydraulics, and roadside ditches.
- Coordinate and oversee the work of the assigned design team to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to project requirements, standards, and schedules.
- Perform design work and oversee the preparation of plans, profiles, and details using Open Roads Designer, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D.
- Produce and perform quality control reviews of erosion control and stormwater management plans, reports, quantities, and specifications.
- Serve as the lead drainage technical liaison with clients, communicating design intent, addressing technical questions, and supporting project decision-making.
- Manage and mentor local drainage engineering staff, providing guidance, feedback, and support for professional development.
- Collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary, collaborative team environment and foster strong, positive relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Support continuous improvement in drainage design practices, flood control strategies, and sustainable water management approaches on transportation projects.
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Water Resources Engineering.
- Minimum of 10 years of drainage design experience related to transportation infrastructure projects.
- Proven ability to lead effectively in a collaborative team environment and build strong, positive relationships with team members and clients.
- Demonstrated experience with local county and municipal transportation or infrastructure projects.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Utah.
- Strong technical expertise in drainage and stormwater design for transportation projects, including highways and roadway systems.
- Proficiency with Open Roads Designer for transportation and drainage design.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD for civil and drainage design and plan production.
- Proficiency with Civil 3D for roadway and drainage design.
- Solid understanding of hydrologic and hydraulic analysis methods and their application to transportation and flood control projects.
Skills & Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Civil Engineering or Water Resources Engineering.
- Experience working on projects with the Utah Department of Transportation.
- Experience in bridge scour and revetment design.
- Demonstrated experience with hydrologic and hydraulic computer programs such as HEC-HMS.
- Demonstrated experience with hydraulic modeling tools such as HEC-RAS and SRH-2D.
- Background in erosion control planning and stormwater management for transportation and site development projects.
- Experience in roadway and highway design within multidisciplinary transportation project teams.
- Strong communication skills to serve as a technical liaison with clients and project stakeholders.
- Interest in and commitment to innovative flood control and sustainable water management solutions.
- Motivation to mentor junior engineers and support their professional growth.
