About the RoleThis is a hands‑on insurance operations leadership role with a specialty P&C carrier. The company is looking for someone who can take ownership of the day‑to‑day operation of the carrier, including statutory filings, state licensing, regulatory correspondence, enterprise risk management documentation, board preparation, reinsurance administration, and coordination with outside advisors.
This is not a narrow compliance seat. The person in this role will have real responsibility for making sure the carrier runs properly from an operational, regulatory, and financial reporting standpoint. They will work closely with executive leadership, outside counsel, accountants, actuaries, AM Best consultants, and reinsurers.
The right candidate will be comfortable working in a smaller carrier environment where there is broad responsibility, limited bureaucracy, and a need for someone who can execute without needing a large team or heavy infrastructure.
Core Responsibilities Carrier Operations- Manage state licensing, expansion activity, admission applications, DOI correspondence, custodial agreements, and multi‑state regulatory filings.
- Oversee the preparation and filing process for quarterly and annual statutory statements with the NAIC and state regulators, including gathering source data, coordinating with outside accountants, reviewing drafts, and ensuring all deadlines are met.
- Maintain enterprise risk management documentation, including the risk register, risk owners, quarterly review process, risk appetite, and tolerance thresholds.
- Support board and advisory board activity by preparing meeting materials, recording minutes, collecting conflict‑of‑interest statements, and coordinating schedules.
- Manage compliance administration, including compliance software, regulatory correspondence, and examination support.
- Handle routine reinsurance reporting, settlement activity, cession reporting, and related operational mechanics.
- Serve as the day‑to‑day point of contact for regulatory counsel, AM Best consultants, independent actuaries, outside accountants, and other key advisors.
- Support operational projects across related business units, including vendor contract reviews, policy documentation, process improvements, and finance‑related projects.
- Help build stronger documentation, redundancy, and structure around finance, compliance, and regulatory processes.
- Work closely with executive leadership on projects tied to carrier growth, regulatory readiness, and operational improvement.
- Direct statutory accounting experience with a P&C carrier, including preparation or review of NAIC annual and quarterly statements.
- Hands‑on state licensing and DOI filing experience, including admission applications, regulator inquiries, and tracking multi‑state compliance requirements.
- At least 5 years of experience working at or directly with a P&C insurance carrier or reinsurer.
- Strong understanding of carrier operations, regulatory obligations, statutory reporting, and insurance compliance.
- Strong written communication skills, with the ability to prepare memos, policies, regulatory responses, board materials, and formal documentation.
- Agency or brokerage experience alone will not be a fit for this role.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with enterprise risk management or compliance program administration, including maintaining a risk register, running compliance reviews, preparing ERM documentation, or supporting rating agency/regulatory reviews.
- Reinsurance operations knowledge, including cession reporting, trust administration, assumed or ceded premium accounting, and settlement mechanics.
- Background working in a small or specialty carrier environment where the role required broad ownership and hands‑on execution.
- Exposure to AM Best rating processes, analyst meetings, rating agency documentation, or work within a rated carrier environment.
- CPA, CPCU, AINS, ARe, or similar…
