To build on a strong foundation of achievement and contribute to the realization of its ambitious institutional goals, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) invites applications for the position of Substitute Teacher – Head Start/Early Head Start Program in East St. Louis. This role involves facilitating developmentally appropriate lesson plans, managing classroom behavior, individualizing instruction, and conducting essential screenings and assessments for young learners.

What You Will Do- Implement program curriculum and Head Standards in the preparation of developmentally appropriate lesson plans, acting as lead facilitator of children’s learning.
- Organize the classroom with well-defined learning centers and maintain a clean, safe, and uncluttered environment.
- Manage classroom operations, including behavior, using appropriate child‑guidance techniques and plan activities for assistants and volunteers.
- Engage with children continuously in the classroom, on the playground, and during transitional times.
- Collaborate with program staff and communicate effectively with parents about children’s progress.
- Maintain accurate classroom records, including attendance, and participate in Center Staff and Head Start program meetings.
Work Schedule: This part‑time position offers up to 18 hours per week. Schedules may change due to teacher absences, student needs, or program adjustments.
FLSA: Non‑Exempt
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications- Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education, or 60 college credits with at least 6 hours in Early Childhood Education and coursework equivalent to a major in Early Childhood Education, including experience teaching infants/toddlers and/or preschool‑aged children;
- One year child‑development experience in a nursery school, kindergarten, or licensed day care center and 30 semester hours of college credit; or
- Completion of a credentialing program approved by the Department in accordance with Appendix G of Early Childhood Teacher Credentialing Programs (Child Development Associate, Certified Childcare Professional, Gateways to Opportunity).
- Baccalaureate degree in Early Childhood Education.

This position does not offer work‑authorization sponsorship.
