Full-time, 10-week summer internship - Team:
Information Security
- Engage in continuous monitoring activities to ensure adherence to internal security protocols, industry standards, and relevant cybersecurity regulations.
- Assist in the development and execution of automated systems designed for both internal and external security evaluations and control assessments.
- Analyze existing security threats, identify emerging vulnerabilities, and assess technical requirements across various platforms, including SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS.
- Work closely with diverse technical teams to distill complex security concepts into practical, actionable plans tailored for different audiences.
- Contribute to the evaluation of risk profiles and support the advancement of Appian's global information security initiatives.
- Participate in the creation of documentation and reports that outline security assessments and recommendations.
- Collaborate with team members to identify areas for improvement in existing security practices and propose innovative solutions.
- Stay updated on the latest trends and developments in cybersecurity to ensure that Appian remains at the forefront of industry standards.
- Education:
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a related STEM field, demonstrating strong academic performance. Applicants should plan to return to their studies following the Summer 2027 internship. - Program Availability:
Applicants must be available to work full-time (40 hours per week) throughout the 10-week summer internship period. - Demonstrated experience with AI and large language models, including both strategic development and practical implementation of AI tools to optimize workflows.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess and mitigate risks effectively.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
- A proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Prior experience in a technical internship or a robust portfolio showcasing relevant personal or academic projects in cybersecurity or related fields.
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, Java, or C++.
- Understanding of security frameworks such as NIST, ISO 27001, or CIS Controls.
- Knowledge of security monitoring tools and frameworks, including SIEM solutions.
- Understanding of cloud security principles and best practices.
- Familiarity with compliance standards such as GDPR, HIPAA, or PCI-DSS.
- Proficiency in risk management methodologies and assessment techniques.

The internship offers a competitive pay rate of $50.00 per hour, which translates to approximately $8,666 per month. Compensation and benefits are subject to change in accordance with applicable plans. - Interns are expected to work on-site in McLean five days a week, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in our community and benefit from the guidance of experienced mentors.
