Job SummaryUnder the general supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Nurse Manager for the Medical/Surgical and Swing-Bed Unit is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising high-quality nursing care for patients across pediatric and geriatric populations. This leader ensures safe, efficient, and compassionate care delivery while fostering a positive team environment, mentoring staff, and collaborating with interdisciplinary partners to support Morrison Community Hospital’s mission and values.
The Nurse Manager serves as a role model and clinical resource, demonstrating accountability for patient outcomes, staff engagement, and operational excellence. This position plays a key role in achieving department goals, promoting evidence-based practice, and supporting regulatory and performance improvement initiatives.
Full-time, primarily Monday–Friday with flexibility for evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed.
Essential Functions- Assists the Chief Nursing Officer in the attainment of departmental goals and initiatives.
- Plans and supervises economical and efficient nursing care, ensuring a clean, safe, and patient-centered environment.
- Provides direct patient care as needed to maintain safe staffing levels and ensure continuity of care.
- Assists in covering open shifts or high-acuity situations when staffing shortages arise, including days, nights, weekends, or holidays as necessary.
- Demonstrates flexibility in supporting other nursing departments during periods of high census, patient surges, or staff absences.
- Leads by example during times of operational need, promoting teamwork and maintaining morale among staff.
- Responds to after-hours concerns or emergent staffing issues as needed, providing leadership guidance and coordination of appropriate follow-up actions.
- Determines staffing needs, making real-time adjustments based on census, acuity, and unit activity.
- Serves as a resource and mentor for staff across assigned units.
- Directs nursing and ancillary staff in both direct and indirect patient care activities.
- Makes assignments with consideration for continuity of care, infection control, patient complexity, and staff skill mix.
- Coordinates patient admissions, discharges, and bed assignments.
- Promotes a positive, team-oriented culture and demonstrates exceptional customer service with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Maintains a thorough understanding of Federal, State, and Local regulations as well as MCH policies, the Code of Conduct, and Guiding Behaviors.
- Mentors staff to deliver patient- and family-focused care.
- Serves as a role model for effective communication, including active listening, conflict resolution, and constructive feedback.
- Promotes staff technical competence and develops individualized action plans to meet professional standards.
- Monitors compliance with practice standards, evidence-based protocols, and quality initiatives.
- Encourages and facilitates staff participation in performance improvement projects.
- Conducts performance appraisals and ongoing coaching for assigned staff.
- Interviews, hires, and orients new team members in collaboration with Human Resources.
- Supports and participates in activities that promote compliance with CMS and IDPH regulations and standards.
- Ensures adequate supplies and equipment are available and maintained in safe working order.
- Provides oversight and education to ensure continued staff development and competence.
- Manages case coordination for Swing-Bed admissions, collaborating with nursing, social services, and referring agencies to ensure seamless transitions of care.
- Identifies training opportunities and provides education to the department as needed
- Performs Monthly nursing and C.N.A. meetings
- Other duties as assigned
- A current Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) license is required.
- Minimum of three (3) years of relevant clinical experience required; prior leadership or charge nurse experience preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication abilities with a focus on team development.
- Must be comfortable operating within a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
- BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications required
- Must possess a personal presence characterized by integrity, empathy, and the ability to inspire and motivate others to uphold the mission and values of Morrison Community Hospital.
- BSN or in pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
- Previous experience in a supervisory position
