Job Description

The role of Special Education Diagnostic Kindergarten Para educator was established to assist teaching personnel in the supervision and instruction of special education students, perform classroom clerical tasks, and support students by meeting personal care and special health care needs, as well as developing academic, daily living and behavioral skills.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Adapts classroom work under the direction of the teacher to support and reinforce lesson plans.
  • Provides instruction under the teacher’s direction in one‑on‑one, small group or whole group situations.
  • Supports the teacher with instructional coverage when needed.
  • Monitors students in classroom, library, playground, etc., to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Implements instructional behavioral programs – IEP goals, behavior intervention plans, and classwide systems – in accordance with lesson plans to improve students’ academic success.
  • Supports inclusion in general education classrooms.
  • Assists with daily living skills such as toileting, changing diapers, feeding, personal hygiene, etc.
  • Assists other personnel (e.g., Speech Language Pathologists, Adaptive PE, other para educators).
  • Maintains students’ files/records for documentation and data collection.
  • Performs record‑keeping and clerical functions (scheduling, copying, etc.) to support the teacher and/or administrator.
  • Adapts to changing work priorities, displays tact and courtesy, meets deadlines, sets priorities, and works with detail.
  • Regular attendance at work is critical.
  • Other duties as assigned by the building principal or Special Education team.
Attendance is an Essential Function
  • Physical presence at the worksite is required for in‑person collaboration, direct interaction with team members, staff, students, and/or guardians, and access to on‑site equipment and resources.
Other Functions
  • Assists other personnel as needed to support completion of their work activities.
Qualifications
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
  • Must be able to assume and maintain a variety of postures (kneeling, squatting, bending, standing, sitting) for extended periods.
  • Safely manage physically or verbally aggressive students.
  • Participate with students in physical fitness activities (walking, stretching, aerobic exercise).
  • Lift occasionally up to 60 lb. at a height of 36 in. and frequently up to 25 lb. at a height of 36 in.
  • Sanitize and clean equipment such as work boxes, exercise equipment, walkers, wheelchairs.
  • Remain calm and follow safety procedures in emergency situations.
  • Supervise and support students during inclement weather (walking to/from bus, recess, etc.).
  • Willing to participate in de‑escalation techniques and MANDT training if needed.
  • May require working with bio‑hazards (blood‑borne pathogens, human waste, cleaning/disinfecting materials).
  • Must be willing to prepare for and pass required trainings or certifications.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 lb. to a height of 36 in.; frequently up to 25 lb. to a height of 36 in.; carry and move instruments for patient handling up to 30 lb.; sometimes lift up to 50 lb. for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to assist children with basic feeding or toileting that may involve the use of partial or assistance.
  • Must be able to safely assist frail individuals and carefully manage the use of assistive devices such as lumbar pants or braces or to avoid spilling substances and chemicals.
