The Public Safety officer's primary purpose is to protect life and property. This is accomplished through a variety of tasks including preventive patrol, reporting suspicious persons/activities, reporting unsafe conditions, providing transportation to students, and enforcing the University's rules and regulations. The officer also regulates pedestrian and vehicular traffic, provides security presence for dignitary visits, special events, and sporting events, writes written reports on all security related matters, and assists South Orange Police, Fire, and Rescue Squad when necessary.
Responsibilities- Conduct patrols of the parking deck, surface parking lots, University grounds, surrounding streets, neighborhoods, and all off-site University locations.
- Lock/Unlock buildings according to daily operation schedule.
- Operate SHU ride transportation vehicles.
- Perform fire extinguisher inspections.
- Control vehicular access to the campus by enforcing regulations requiring parking permits and/or parking guest passes.
- Identify and/or remove unauthorized vehicles from campus.
- Create and maintain departmental incident reports, calls for service, motor vehicle accident reports, property reports, and work orders identifying safety concerns.
- Act as the first responder to all emergency calls on campus, including medical emergencies (CPR, AED, and First Aid), fire alarms, bomb threats, intrusion alarms, and maintenance.
- Provide customer service: directions, escorts/transportation on and off campus, vehicular jump‑starts, and vehicle lock‑outs.
- Provide security services during visits of dignitaries, special events, and sporting contests: direct and control vehicular/pedestrian traffic, conduct package inspections, and maintain crowd control.
High School diploma or GED. Must work well under pressure. Must analyze and evaluate situations and determine appropriate action. Must clearly communicate directions, instructions, SHU policy and regulations to community members. Must be in good physical condition to ride a bicycle for an 8‑hour shift.
Desired QualificationsCommunity policing course, CPR, AED First Aid, Narcan certification. Ability to write a clear and concise report.
Licenses And CertificatesValid NJ driver's license to operate department vehicles including 14 passenger vehicles.
Salary Range$15.92 - $17.60 per hour.
