Mechanic, Tractor Trailer

Essential Functions

• Performs preventative and routine maintenance on tractors and trailers.
• Conducts basic diagnostics to identify trouble sources and makes necessary adjustments to equipment for safe and efficient operation.
• Collaborates with other technicians in performing preventative maintenance and repairs.
• Ensures proper and accurate documentation of all maintenance performed, completing reports in writing and electronically.
• Performs safety inspections of equipment and documents the work.
• Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies and procedures.
• Specializes in repairing and troubleshooting major components such as engines, transmissions, and differentials, including replacing complete assemblies, turbochargers, fuel system components, etc.
• Completes other projects and tasks as assigned by supervisor.

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 2-4 years of practical experience with tractor-trailer maintenance required.
• At least one year of vehicle maintenance experience or possession of a vehicle maintenance certificate from an accredited vocation or trade school, or completion of this company's apprentice program with satisfactory performance.
• One or more Medium/Heavy Truck ASE certifications and Class A CDL preferred.

• Proficiency in the repair and diagnosis of engines (gas and diesel), powertrain components (differentials, transmissions, clutches, drive shafts, PTOs, wheel ends), electrical systems (starters, alternators, ECMS, ECUs, sensors), HVAC systems, steering systems, and electronics.
• Proficiency with engine bolt-on items such as turbos, fan clutches, injectors and cooling system components.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Mathematical and documentation skills necessary.
• Ability to work with hands in mechanically oriented situations.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to work flexible shifts, if required, including on call.
• Identify and determine parts required for repair of disassembled units.
• Perform all levels of preventive maintenance services on truck and trailer equipment.
• Identify warrantable repairs and document on repair order.
• Maintain work area appearance and safety.

• Frequent lifting of components weighing approximately 110 pounds with appropriate equipment or assistance.
• Operation of vehicles equipped with manual and automatic transmission.
• Frequent standing, walking, pushing, pulling, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
• Ability to enter and exit driver’s compartment of truck and/or behind cab using normally available foot and handholds.
• Use of hand and power tools.

• Hourly rate: $28.25 to $35.25.
