South Portland Adult Education is a member of the statewide system of more than 100 connected adult learning programs and centers across the state of Maine. SPAE offers programming in four major categories: ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses provide adult multilingual learners quality study and practice in English speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills. Workforce Training courses help prepare adult learners by providing the modern skills training necessary for new careers, promotions, and other career advancement.
College Transitions courses and advising, under the umbrella of the Maine College and Career Access program, assist adults of all ages wishing to make the transition into college-level courses. HiSET®, the High School Equivalency test for the state of Maine, helps adults complete their high school education and move forward in their college and career goals. South Portland Adult Education believes that all adult learners are able to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for post‑secondary education, career, and citizenship.

This teaching position will support students in the five subjects found on the HiSET
- Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies, and Math, during the summer session. The instructor will plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program for adult HiSET program learners that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential using current teaching strategies and adult learning theories.
- Provide small group and/or one‑on‑one instruction and academic support to adults of varying academic levels in the following subjects:
- Reading
- Writing
- Science
- Social Studies
- Math
- Teach test‑taking and study skills using personalized, effective teaching strategies, multiple teaching modalities, and digital tools to meet students' needs.
- Prepare written lessons and outlines for class and homework that effectively cover the HiSET® material at an appropriate level of difficulty.
- Prepare, administer, and grade assignments and Official HiSET® Practice Tests to evaluate students' readiness to take the Official HiSET® tests.
- Communicate regularly with students about progress and determine the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional plans, techniques, or goals.
- Employ and implement a classroom structure and consistency to encourage student responsibility, cooperation, and mutual respect in line with program policies and procedures.
- Perform administrative duties such as taking attendance, organizing classroom supplies and materials, and responding to emails and Whats App messages from staff and students in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with the Program Coordinator and Director regarding student needs, instructional needs, new instructional technologies or approaches to student problems, learning or curriculum.
- Attend administrative meetings to provide assistance in curriculum development, assessing student progress and performance, or to participate in program decision‑making.
- Maintain prompt, regular in‑person attendance and be available on‑site during teaching hours.
- Bachelor's degree
- Current State of Maine CHRC (fingerprinting) or willingness to acquire CHRC
- Eligibility for Maine Educator Endorsement as Adult Education Teacher in one or more of the following endorsement areas: 100 English/language arts, 200 social studies, 300 mathematics, 350 physical science, and 395 life science.
- Knowledge of instructional strategies that connect the curriculum to the learner.
