First Assist Congenital Cardiac Nurse (RNFA) Job Description

The First Assist Congenital Cardiac Nurse (RNFA) is a highly specialized registered nurse who provides surgical first-assist support for congenital cardiac procedures. This role requires advanced knowledge and technical skills in congenital cardiac surgeries, collaboration with the surgical team, and a commitment to exceptional patient care. The RNFA works directly under the supervision of the operating surgeon, assisting with procedures on pediatric and adult patients with congenital heart defects.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the first assist to the surgeon during congenital cardiac surgeries, including tasks such as tissue handling, wound closure, and hemostasis.
  • Utilize advanced surgical techniques in line with surgeon preferences and patient needs.
  • Anticipate the surgeon's needs and ensure the operating room environment is optimized for efficiency and safety.
  • Collaborate in the preoperative assessment and preparation of patients for congenital cardiac procedures.
  • Support postoperative care by assisting with wound management, monitoring recovery, and providing patient education.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds to ensure continuity of care.
  • Partner with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and operating room staff to ensure seamless surgical workflows.
  • Mentor and educate nursing staff on congenital cardiac procedures and assistive techniques.
Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in Maine.
  • Completion of an accredited RNFA program.
  • CNOR certification (preferred).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications and PALS.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of operating room experience, with at least 1-2 years in cardiac surgery.
  • Demonstrated expertise in congenital cardiac surgery is highly preferred.
Schedule

This is a 13-week contract position with a schedule from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM.
