Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Network Security Officer, the Network Specialist designs, installs, configures, monitors, and maintains the WAN/LAN connectivity and network infrastructure of the district. The specialist also designs and maintains the wireless system, manages the server infrastructure, and creates and maintains network topology maps. Responsibility extends to implementing appropriate network security protocols to protect district information systems.

Essential Functions
  • Architect and install new hardware, systems, services, and software for WAN segments spanning multiple data centers.
  • Maintain and support Active Directory.
  • Install and support physical and virtual server infrastructure.
  • Lead planning and support efforts for large‑scale network infrastructure.
  • Perform troubleshooting analysis of switches, firewalls, and routing across multiple data centers.
  • Configure firewalls, access points, routing, and switching to maximize network efficiency and security.
  • Install, test, and configure Palo Alto firewalls and other DMZ systems.
  • Maintain network file storage (NAS, SAN).
  • Maintain backup software (Veeam).
  • Configure and maintain Hyper‑V virtual server environment.
  • Facilitate device refresh of network security devices focusing on capacity, manageability, and security.
  • Troubleshoot firewall and web proxy issues.
  • Evaluate and recommend new and emerging services and technologies.
  • Maintain and construct district WAN/LAN.
  • Create and maintain network topology maps.
  • Assign and track IP address ranges to locations.
  • Configure and maintain routers at all locations.
  • Support the implementation and ongoing maintenance of network services such as:
    • Forwarding Proxy Servers
    • Web Connectivity (HTTP/HTTPS)
    • Application Delivery Controllers (F5)
    • Encrypted Remote Access (VPN)
    • Microsoft Identity Manager (MIM)
    • Domain Name Server (DNS)
    • Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS)
    • Mail Spam filtering and encryption (Barracuda)
    • Web Content Filtering (iBoss)
    • IP address assignment (DHCP)
  • Other duties as assigned.
Non‑essential Functions

Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Understanding of routers, switches, cabling, and related network hardware.
  • Knowledge of security, internet protocols, TCP/IP, and server network infrastructure.
  • Experience using Cisco Prime, ISE, and DLT products.
  • Strong understanding of Cisco Wireless design and configuration.
  • Skill in using F5 load balancers.
  • Skill in monitoring traffic and utilization with SNMP flow‑based tools.
  • Ability to diagnose technical problems and determine proper resolution, leveraging all available knowledge.
  • Ability to use Palo Alto Firewall configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Skill in configuring Cisco routers with routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, EIRGP).
  • Skill in configuring VPNs, VLANs, and VLAN trunking.
  • Skill in managing Windows/O365, Active Directory, Exchange, and Advanced Threat Protection.
  • Understanding of TCP/IP, UDP, ICMP, GRE, and other protocols.
  • Deploy and manage NMS, TACACS+, IPAM, etc.
  • Understanding of VOIP using Skype for Business.
  • Ability to perform packet captures using Wire Shark or Netscout.
Required Education and Qualifications
  • Either a bachelor’s degree or higher in a computer‑related field from a regionally accredited college or university, or
    • a minimum of six (6) years of combined education and work experience in a computer‑related field.
  • A current certification in one of the following is preferred:
    • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
    • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
    • Microsoft Certified Expert (MCE)
Certification Requirements

If an applicant does not hold one of the certifications listed above, the applicant will be required to sign an agreement to complete at least one of the certifications within the first three years of hire. Failure to complete certification will result in separation.
