The Position

2026 Summer Intern - Synthetic Molecule Analytical Chemistry

Department Summary

Synthetic Molecule Analytical Chemistry (SMAC), within Drug Discovery in gRED, is responsible for ensuring the safe and timely development of new therapeutic candidates. We work within cross functional teams to ensure the safe delivery of early-phase clinical material. You will have the opportunity to join a world-class department and learn about drug development from experts in the field.

This internship position is located in San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity
  • Lead project under the guidance of the internship manager.
  • Design, execute, and document experiments.
  • Provide periodic updates to internship manager on experimental progress.
  • Present findings upon internship completion to the department and at a Genentech wide intern event.
Program Highlights
  • Intensive 12 weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
  • Program start dates are in May/June 2026.
  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
  • Opportunity to learn about synthetic molecule drug development.
  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.
Who You Are

Required

Education:

Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required Majors:Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Required Skills:
  • Experienced working with RNA.
  • Experienced characterizing RNA with Mass Spectrometry.
  • Liquid-chromatography Mass Spectrometry.
  • Proficient at implementing and developing quantitative assays.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and

Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $46.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
