Hours per Day: 7.5 (8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday)

Under the supervision of the program's assistant director/principal, the sign language interpreter provides students who are deaf and hard of hearing with sign language interpreting services in elementary and/or secondary settings within Dakota County. Interpreters establish and maintain effective communication with students, teachers, and staff while maintaining confidentiality and supporting communication among team members. They may provide in-service training, use knowledge of classroom subject matters, assistive listening devices, and Deaf culture to facilitate optimal access to interpreted messages.
Responsibilities- Provide sign language interpreting services to students in elementary and/or secondary settings.
- Follow program direction and prepare for assignments to ensure effective interpreting and transliterating services.
- Adapt physical conditions to optimize students' visual access to interpreted messages in instructional settings.
- Prepare for duties by studying subject matter, meeting with teachers and instructors, and practicing related sign vocabulary.
- Adhere to the code of conduct for educational interpreters.
- Be aware of students' language and skill levels, ensuring appropriate interpreting techniques; review and facilitate individualized education plans as appropriate.
- Perform classroom assistance, tutoring, and supervision of students when not interpreting.
- Help maintain safety of all students and the environment.
- Collaborate with related service personnel, teachers, assistants, and other staff to meet student needs and maintain a positive work environment.
- Participate in program assignments, training, and in-service activities as determined by the special education supervisor.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
- Demonstrated skill and certification in expressive and receptive sign language interpreting (NAD/ACCI, EIPA, or RID preferred; provisional certificate required).
- Experience interpreting in an educational setting preferred.
- Ability to work as a team player, take various assignments at different locations, and support students' language, communication, self-advocacy, and developmental needs.
- Willingness and ability to work with students receiving special education services.
- Effective collaboration with staff, parents, and community.
- Basic computer and email proficiency; proficiency in core educational subject areas.
- Ability to handle up to 25 pounds of exerted force.
- Requires frequent standing, speaking or hearing, using hands, repetitive motions, sitting, and reaching.
- Occasional walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
- Ability to tolerate sudden jarring movement.
- Vocal communication required; hearing at normal spoken word levels required.
- Occasional exposure to outdoor weather and blood borne pathogens; may require protective equipment.
- Work environments generally moderately noisy.
