Position Summary:
Understand the tool building processes from specifications as noted in blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, and visualizes product to determine materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts. Analyzes specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to fabricate and repair Matched Metal Dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, and machinists’ hand tools.

responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.
Matched Metal Tool Makers are assessed through their skill & tool build performance under a three level scale (a tool build difficulty scale):
- Level 1
- Understands the job ticket requirements and completes each job timely and accurate.
- General shop maintenance.
- Work lift trained and material moving equipment.
- Performs all duties apparent and as assigned.
- Material management and inventory assistance as directed.
- Cleans work area.
- Follow all safety rules, practice and promote preventative safety.
- Follow company policies and procedures.
- Cut, shape, and trim blanks or blocks to specified lengths or shapes, using power saws, machine tools, grinders, and hand tools.
- File, grind, shim, and adjust different parts to properly fit them together.
- Lift, position, and secure machined parts on surface plates or worktables, using hoists, vises, v‑blocks, or angle plates.
- Measure, mark, and scribe metal or plastic stock to lay out machining, using instruments such protractors, micrometers, scribes, and rulers.
- Smooth and polish flat and contoured surfaces of parts or tools, using scrapers, abrasive stones, files, emery cloths, or power grinders.
- Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators.
- Level 2 (Includes all or most of level one and the following)
- Meets with engineers to discuss potential machine problems.
- Conduct test runs with completed tools or dies to ensure that parts meet specifications; adjust as necessary.
- Fit and assemble parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools.
- Inspect finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects.
- Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes.
- Study blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools, dies, or assemblies.
- Visualize and compute dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of assemblies, based on specifications.
- Design jigs, fixtures, and templates for use as work aids in the fabrication of parts or products.
- Level 3 (Includes all or most of level one, two and the following)
- Examines standard or previously used dies, tools, and jigs and fixtures and has skill to recommend design modifications regarding construction and function of part.
- Assist in the decision‑making process of future machine and tooling purchases.
- Assist design in selecting select metals to be used from a range of metals and alloys, based on properties such as hardness and heat tolerance.
- Assists designer/engineers to develop and design new tools and dies.

Education and/orExperience:
- Requires education generally equivalent to a 2-year Technical Degree.
- Requires 2+ years of machinist experience.
